Environmental Sustainability

We prioritize environmental sustainability within and beyond AbbVie and engage our workforce to steward sustainability.

AbbVie’s science-based targets to lower emissions

To build a more sustainable future, we’ve set ambitious emissions reduction targets that are in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. Our targets, which have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), include:

By 2030

  • Reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 42% from a 2021 base year
  • Reaching 100% sourcing of electricity from renewable sources

By 2027

  • Ensuring over 79.1% of suppliers (by emissions covering Purchased Goods & Services, Capital Goods, and Upstream Transportation & Distribution) will have science-based targets

By taking actions now to lessen [the effects of climate change], we can ensure our long-term resiliency and sustainability of supporting patients in the long term.

Delivering on our goals

We’ve made significant progress against our new science-based targets in the first year, and have implemented a range of energy efficiency and decarbonization projects to help us. Through these projects, we have:

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
  • Globally we’ve expanded our use of electric and hybrid vehicles in our fleet and invested in electric vehicle charging stations at our facilities
  • We’ve reduced our natural gas and electricity by discontinuing a legacy product’s production in our North Chicago facility
DECARBONIZATION
  • In our Liege Belgium site, we’ve installed a photovoltaic solar system that can provide up to one third of the site's annual electricity needs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 120 metric tons
