Under the umbrella of the Global EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) Initiative, our local EHS team partnered with the local Samaritan Association of Cham to organize first aid training sessions. All employees were invited to participate and refresh their skills to help in emergency situations.
The training was primarily hands-on, with an initial theory session. To allow close supervision by the two trainers from the Samaritan Association, the participants were divided into small groups to ensure that each exercise was closely monitored.
The coaches of the Samaritan Association of Cham demonstrated techniques like the "forearm grip," used to move an unconscious person.
At the beginning during the introduction, participants shared their past experiences with first aid situations. Many had faced emergencies, like Myriam, who described a time while biking to work on a quiet street. Suddenly, the car in front of her stopped, and the driver stepped out, holding onto the car before collapsing unconscious onto the street. Myriam acted promptly by dialing 144, though the five minutes before help arrived seemed interminable. Like Myriam, the rest of the group wanted to gain confidence in handling such situations.
Even though the topic was serious, and the training sessions lasted for three hours, the atmosphere was positive. The coaches interspersed stories and facts to make the exercises engaging rather than daunting. At the end of training, Isabelle remarked, “I am now much more confident that I would know how to react appropriately in an emergency. I am very grateful to AbbVie for offering this refresher training, as it's even more likely we will encounter emergencies in our private lives than during the eight hours at work.”
